✨Behind the Scenes Reel✨
“Night and Day as One” is a traditional Dene babiche bag that focuses on the duality experience of full daylight during the summer solstice and almost a full darkness days during winter solstice, merging the experience as night and day being one within our arctic Northern landscape.

Aiming to bring an experience into the handwork of our ancestral practices and their continued livelihood of our traditional ways. Reconciliation in action. Dene babiche bags were commonly made amongst our peoples as a loving embrace for ones husband to bring home meat. The netted pattern causes the meat to be able to breathe. A tradition that feels important for our family (I am already starting an even bigger babiche bag meant for our family harvests)

Thankful to continue onwards this tradition in rematriating a process our Dene ancestral families have done for hundreds of years... A traditional handiwork focusing on the love throughout the landscape, the profound experience of light in the North, embracing both day and night while reflecting various colours of experience and my commitment to honour our Dene ancestors onwards for our next generations and beyond.

“Night and Day as One”
This Dene hunting bag is an exploration of the unique duality experienced in the Arctic, where the relentless cycle of perpetual daylight in summer transitions into the profound stillness of extended cold winter nights. The Dene Babiche bag aims to capture the essence of both extremes, inviting viewers into a world where time feels both suspended and in constant motion.

Making the Dene hunting bag throughout the days and nights, for over 150 hours, truly became a reflection of the ancestral continuum of hard work and dedication my ancestors so gracefully practiced in their everyday life. The traditional Dene babiche bag embellishments are divided into two harmonious halves, each reflecting the stark contrasts of our Arctic experience. The red colour throughout represents the life across the vast land that is our home, which sustains our indigenous livelihood and has for thousands of years, while cohabiting with so much beauty everywhere. The right orange / yellow flower bloom is a reflection of our beloved sun and the blue / rustic yellow is a reflection of our sweet moon.

✨ Completed this Yup’ik style bag today at the @dananayeventures conference & have been reflecting on how lovely it is to be around so many incredible entrepreneurs. The previous time I was at a big event was during @indigenousyukon Adaka Festival summer of 2024, where I had the lovely opportunity to share the skill of Porcupine Quill Loom weaving and I got to participate in @quki92 Yup’ik Bag workshop. I remember going to Golga & being honest that I wanted support on my line work with caribou neck hair, it was so kind of Golga to accept my transparency & to support me with it. I have been practicing all winter and been getting better at it, incorporating it into my big projects and designs. Thanks Golga for helping me and being happy to guide me. #AmazingYupikArtist

Thankful for the lovely space of @kwanlindunculturalcentre where hearing such powerful voices speak about dreams | goals | the tools to achieve them touched my heart. Same location as the very missed Adaka Gathering (I pray the Indigenous Yukon Organization gets it together to continue to provide opportunities for artists to come together! It is so needed & I am missing the emails about announcing applications to participate - Hopefully next year or not too long from now!)

It feels good to finally complete this bag, which is intended for me to keep. I put the project aside as I have been working on some other bigger projects. Glad I did because when I decided to finish this during these next few days I also decided to use a hide I tanned back in 2012, that I dipped in acorn tannins. It felt meaningful for me to work with a hide from so long ago from my hide tanning journey. The bag will be for carrying caribou hair I am using for current projects on the go. A meaningful bag for me as I seem to carry my hair around in plastic zip-lock and this feels so much more honourable to the medicine of the four-legged, to transport in a vessel such as this Yup’ik style bag.

Today reminded me of the “trade blanket” I started to bring to the Adaka gathering two years ago. Which the past two years has been such a beautiful experience to witness artists trading with one another, showing resiliency and beauty.

These earrings are a tribute to the Dene tradition of working with silk velvet (all the pieces I have from my grandmother and great grandmother are done on silk velvet / moose hide) and the historical tufting of vibrant floral designs. Incorporating materials from the land, such as home tanned moosehide, caribou hair and porcupine quills, are a reflection of the deep connection our Dene peoples have with their environment.

The earrings’ moccasin upper shape symbolizes the steps taken towards reconciliation and the reclamation of my Dene heritage and traditional ways of life. They serve as a reminder of the Dene matriarchs and aunties who have tirelessly preserved these traditions, even with the impacts of colonization and residential school. These earrings are a reminder of the beauty our ancestors created and the continuum of creating in their honour.

These earrings offer a glimpse into the exquisite embellishment techniques of our Dene ancestors and stand as an example of a testament to their enduring cultural beauty.

NFS 💕 Baby Áhdā Wrap Arounds 💕
Finally pieced together these Moosehide wrap arounds, which are tufted with Caribou Hair that Curtis and I coloured together. They have been a wonderful and hard effort - I am thankful for the guidance of Brandy Tizya (@gwitchinelegance), who put on a workshop through CYFN @councilofyukonfirstnations and was encouraging me with my vision I had, while supporting me to get started. I always love sewing around others and It was a beautiful time being around so many lovely and talented ladies. Thank you, Family Preservation.

I am also thankful for the guidance of Eleanor Mitchell-Firth whose creations are such a big inspiration for me. Her details of stitches really had me obsessing over my welts. I re-did each side three times +! I also redid the wrap around stitches (I never noticed the longer flaps were the same on each side, which Curtis noticed and encouraged me to un-do and re-do), which believe me was tough, sewing with sinew and re-doing really taught me a lot! I am thankful for her encouragement, thank you Eleanor.

The inners are actually re-used from a pair of wrap arounds that Eleanor made, that I gifted to K’aí K’í, for Christmas a few years ago. Waiting for order of felt wool to attempt to make some of my own.

The blue flower is a symbol of human veins, and how two halves make whole - a complete flower. The red hearts is our love for our children and I also decided to bead the edges of the wrap arounds and tongue of the mukluks to represent the beauty of birthing children, when on the edge of it all while about to give birth to a beautiful creation. The red fabric is in honour of the ancestors and so they may recognize and protect our next generation.

Materials: Hometanned Moosehide, Coloured Caribou Hair (By @caribou.curtis and myself @mariarosesikyea), Home-tanned deer hide string, wool, antique beads and string.

🫣 A little sneak peek into what I have been doing until 3:30am most evenings… 😴 making a Dene Babiche bag!

➡️ It feels like I have been silently learning and growing with this project. The connection to my matriarchs and the land shines through each stitch and it's been so heartwarming to experience how much joy and healing its brought me, during the quiet hours. Something moves different while the surrounding areas have sleeping bodies dreaming. I was hearing the winds gentle strong howling, as if I could hear the ancestors walking on snow pathed lands, in a far off distant place. The sleepless nights definitely feel worth it for such a beautiful outcome and it feels like a meaningful piece of Dene art, reflecting my process of rematriating my pathway forward, as an indigenous artisan attempting to reclaim her ancestral ways.

I'm absolutely blown away by the 150+ hours and 250+ individual caribou hair tufts that have gone into this work, it is as if time stopped, went back in history to heal and moved forward into the future 🤯

🌱”Lavender & Sage Fields”🍃

NFS | A lovely custom order opportunity of sage fields mixed with lavender gardens, as their dancing with sunlight touches of gold-filled cones and vintage beads, gem stones, and antique micro beads all pieced together into these “Caribou Dancers” earrings.

➡️Some of my favourite scents of our household, as we use lavender soap and sage fills our lungs, sometimes daily. A special plant relation was reflected into this set of earrings, a familiarity of our daily lives and connection to the plant gifts of the earth. I always find the personalization within the custom orders is truly from the heart and always thankful for the opportunity to adorn peoples’ akin, with instructions that make visionary pictures and memories of warmth filled days of gathering plant medicine with the earths blessed soil.

💜 Ear hooks/hoops are not attached because purchaser is gifting them to their wife and adding their own 24k gold hoops.

She loves it! I recently got to finally gift this #caribouhair tufted pin to the main member of my support team for a hopeful upcoming project 🫶🏽🫎!

My inspiration is the joyfull experience of gathering ice cubes from a frozen lake 🧊 to make red rose tea with! The pale pink centres of each petal reflect the pinkish tone of frozen lake water tea! ☕️ I find it tastes much sweeter and has a unique feeling to it…

💧It brings such good memories of making tea in the bush on a hunt, or with family on the land and having special tea time with elders… it is a meaningfull memory as I gifted this pin to a truly lovely supportive woman who has helped me move forward with my dream project, during a tea time discussion! The blues tufts and beads also reflect the clear and clean Northern lake water and the landscape during a very cold winter 🗻

The pin is pictured ontop of a large Dene Baiche Bag I have been working on for months, which is my focus to comeplete these coming weeks!

The simplicity of natural materials sometimes gives me stillness in the moment… These lovely caribou hair pieces together bring such a dance of a remembrance into the sunrises kissed landscape of another season! And, as the light has been returning so does the feelings of embracing the changes of seasons.

❄️ This picture was taken while it is -30f outside yet the colours are a clear showcase of summer vibes! So, it felt meaningful side by side - A custom made bundle of caribou hair which really feels important and meaningful… The past years I spent over 10,000+ hours tufting and over 400 hours colouring caribou hair together with my husband @caribou.curtis this year! It feels at this point it is beyond a method of providing for our family but simply apart of our journey and our way of life, aiming to live a traditional Dene way of livelihood. It is so much part of the path forward and I am so thankful for the moments held tight.

🌸✨Twilight Forgetmenot ✨💙 ***Available*** This necklace is a forgetmenot flower in twilight hues in the early morning when purple comes out in reflection of the dark night starry twinkling sky. The cobolt blue is like the blue haze of the sky during twilight and the shimmering gemstones reflect the starty night 💫

✨ I really focused on advancing my tufting skills with this flower, creating multiple tuft shapes within one petal. There is over 50+ tufts in this flower. The white represents the droplets of water in the first morning light creating the dew of moisture to be blessed by moonlight, starlight and the rising sunshine bliss (reflected in the centre pollen circle) the centre has a large boarder reflecting the halo that we see during the rising sun 🌄 The white tufts also resemble a five pointed star 🌟!

📿The beads used are vintage very old white hearts mixed with newer whitehearts (Blue) The larger ones are late 1800s, the newer ones are mid 1900s. I wanted to relfect the timelessness and ancientness of the constellations and our relation with the aspects of changes within a 24hr cycle. The pink-purple beads are waxy vintage french seedbeads and lapis luzli, which is a stone often reflecting in Egyptian pyramids connecting to the sky and almost look like the sky when seen in bigger chunks with golden speckles (similar to the night sky) 🌌!

✨ These sweet gems are micro tufted caribou hair, gently pieced together. They’re smaller than the other pair I made recently and I always love how micro tufting really challenges me with precision. All the hair was coloured by my husband @caribou.curtis and myself @mariarosesikyea 💖

🫎 The finishing day for this Internship was today! I am so enthralled with the progress everyone has made and feel graditude to support these lovely womens along their tufting journey. I feel confident in each and everyone of them! Looking forward to see what they create with their new knowledge 🌷

🌸 Tufting a micro-caribou hair floral design today was a challenge met with ambition, courage and dexterity. The precision was tough at first and each one faced it beautifully. Going to miss these session and each and every one of you, I am so proud of you! I had a lot of fun with the Indian Bingo! Thanks for bringing items for the fun of sharing!

🫎 Babiche bags are traditional Dene hunting bags, used by families to support their harvests. Made by the woman, representing the fruitfulness of the future ahead. A tradition Maria aims to continue, keeping Dene history practiced; a historical living artform into today’s modern world. Made with love and care with natural materials harvested, processed and assembled by Marias’ family, together.

🏔️ Materials: White tanned caribou skin, processed silverberries into beads by Maria and her husband @caribou.curtis from @kwanlindunculturalcentre backyard, Caribou and Moose hair coloured by them together aswell, hometanned moosehide, harvested porcupine by Maria’s father-in-law and porcupine quills processed together in the bush, circa 1800s beads in deep blue: Chevrons, Dogans and Tubular Russian Blue.

💖 This bag was gifted to the CYFN - Family Preservation and Jordans Principle (Debra Bear) in honour of their supports during baby Àhdā’s arrival, our families healing and their on-going supports through their program for Yukon Families.
